PMO Execution and Improvement

05 October 2007

PMO Execution

The execution phase is the ongoing operation of the PMO. It includes offering four types of services:

  • General services are offered by almost all PMOs.
  • Supportive services provide support to project managers and project teams.
  • Controlling services assess, review, and audit status.
  • Directive services are used to directly manage projects.

PMO Improvement

When a PMO has been offering services for a period of time, it is ready to grow and improve. The PMO must also adjust to organizational change. This is done in the improvement phase, which consists of two activities:

  • Improve PMO operation. The PMO improves its own operations by first measuring its effectiveness and then implementing changes to existing services and adding new services. The PMO may also need to update its charter.
  • Improve maturity level. The PMO can assess the overall capability of the organization to reliably deliver acceptable project results on time and within budget, and then develop and implement a long-term plan to improve that capability.
