Project Office Audit

Audit. An audit is a special inquiry into a specific project. Not every project is audited. An audit is called for a specific reason, such as: a dissatisfied customer; a worried executive stakeholder or sponsor; problems with delays, cost overruns, or project quality; or the departure of a project manager. The audit may occur at the end of a phase or during a phase. The purpose of the audit is to determine project status, define crucial problems, and chart a course towards a solution. It is important to note that, usually, an audit is not trying to point fingers. How to fix the problems is more useful than who caused the problems. An audit should be led by a qualified independent auditor with the experience and expertise in project management, auditing, and the technical area of the project. In most cases, this auditor can work with the project team.
