Project Management Office Development Teams

In the 1970s and 1980s, the United States government very much wanted to know that software development teams could be counted on to produce reliable results. The particular concern was for software development for the military, but the issue was brought to NASA, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, which needed software to be developed for the Space Shuttle. A collaboration was created among NASA, a think-tank called SEI, and software developers for NASA. SEI is the Software Engineering Institute, and it is housed at the Carnegie Mellon University (CMU), in Pittsburgh, PA. The SEI has released two standards related to software development project management:The original Capability Maturity Model® (CMM®), which had five levelsThe newer CMMI® (CMM®-Integration), which is more modular, so that organizations doing particular kinds of development can take different paths to maturity
