Project Office Sponsored Program07 August 2008Project Office Sponsored Program One benefit of the fact that CMM® was a NASA-sponsored program is that all of the methods that were developed are available to all companies, worldwide, for free. In fact, CMM® has become a global standard, and is very popular in the People's Republic of China.CMM® was so successful that different versions were developed for a variety of software engineering fields. Ultimately, this led to the difficulty of similar, yet not identical CMM® models. To end this confusion, the SEI launched a program to integrate all the different CMM® models into CMMI®.The SEI defines CMMI® as "a process improvement approach that provides organizations with the essential elements of effective processes. It can be used to guide process improvement across a project, a division, or an entire organization. CMMI® helps integrate traditionally separate organizational functions, set process improvement goals and priorities, provide guidance for quality processes, and provide a point of reference for appraising current processes." (www.sei.cmu.edu/cmmi/general/general.html) Organizations can learn the CMM® and CMMI® models and apply them, increasing their ability to reliably deliver software development projects with acceptable results on time and within budget.
