In some cases, the PMO allows an organization to maintain multiple online project managment software solutions for a single function. For example, the PMO may allow a department to continue using the software program it has already chosen while standardizing the rest of the organization on a different package. Usually, this is an interim step, and a single solution is ultimately made the standard across the entire organization. Maintaining two software packages for the same function is very expensive because it includes purchase, maintenance, training, and integration of data.

Most PMOs elect to standardize, promote, and deploy project management templates software as part of the solution. This may be done when the PMO first launches operations, or it may be done later as an improvement. In either case, software is adopted using the four steps shown in this diagram:
