MPMM Method123 Project Management Methodology

Online Project Management Tools

03 February 2009

Evaluate existing internal software. All or part of the organization may be using online project management tools before the PMO is launched. The PMO should evaluate these tools and decide if they should be discontinued immediately, phased out over time, allowed for  current users, or promoted across the organization. Things begins with an identification of each existing internal application and a gap analysis between the current state of the application and the software requirements.

Evaluate relevant external software. The PMO may be considering the purchase of external software packages. If so, each package should be reviewed against requirements by performing a gap analysis. This will aid in the purchase and adoption of the best and most cost-effective software solution.

Prepare software adoption schedule. The software adoption schedule has two elements: the statement of approach, and the software milestone chart. The statement of approach addresses the question of how the PMO will go about acquiring or developing the software for the PMIS. The software milestone chart lays out the major dates for development, testing, and deployment of each project management templates software.
