Define Project Management Functional Requirements
The functional requirements of a database are defined in terms of groups of users, where each group has different needs for, access to, and control over the data and the database system. The data analyst defines the user groups, the needs of each group, and the interface that will satisfy those needs. User groups typically include:
| n | Data entry. The group or groups that enter data into the system. In project management, this often includes three sub-groups: all project workers, when entering their timesheet register; project managers creating plans; and project administrators entering status data. | | n | Data review and editing. For project management, this includes the project manager and more advanced project administrators who check data and modify plans. | | n | Data access. This includes everyone who views or receives reports from the online project management system. People who review reports need access to the system. People who receive reports may get them delivered in electronic or printed form, without actually having access to the DBMS. | | n | System management. Certain functions, such as changes to the data structure, should only be performed by a skilled IT manager of the system called a database administrator (DBA). | | n | Business management. If the system contains financial or other business-critical information, certain functions, such as the deletion of financial transactions, should be granted only to executives with the appropriate authority from governance and knowledge of audit trail requirements. |
