Developing Project Management Strategies Online31 March 2009Developing Project Management Strategies Online This page provides a process for developing a online project management knowledge management system in the four steps shown in this diagram: 1. Define Knowledge Base Requirements 2. Evaluate Existing Internal Knowledge Bases 3. Evaluate Relevant External Knowledge Bases 4. Develop Knowledge Base Adoption Plan Define knowledge base requirements. The knowledge base, like the database, will have content, functional, structural, and technical requirements. Evaluate existing internal knowledge bases. The organization already has a great deal of data that belongs in the knowledge base, and also data structures that need to be incorporated. A knowledge base system, or some of its component programs, may already have been acquired, as well. Evaluate relevant external knowledge bases. Knowledge base systems can be acquired and customized, or can be built by integrating components. Develop knowledge base adoption plan. Implementing a knowledge management system is a major undertaking. In this section, the adoption plan and milestone chart will be developed. A knowledge base will include one or more relational databases and multiple software programs. The Project Management Templates from three different MPOM™ template pages can be used to specify knowledge base requirements and evaluate internal and external knowledge base components. Use the Knowledge Base Execution Plan to guide the overall process, then use copies of the templates in the Database Execution Plan and Software Execution Plan to define the details.
