Publicizing the PMO and its Services

21 April 2009

The Publicity Plan guides the work of publicizing the PMO and its services. It is created following the five steps:

No arrows are shown because the planning of this publicity can be done in any order. All five planning steps should be completed before publicity begins. Publicity of each service will be coordinated with the service launch date.

1. Publicize Charter.

2. Publicize General Services

3. Publicize Supportive Services

4. Publicize Controlling Services

5. Publicize Directive Services

Publicize charter. The PMO charter and business case contain crucial information, such as PMO goals and problems to be solved, that can be used to publicize the PMO and its value.

Publicize general services. The general services the PMO will offer are publicized so that they will be widely used. The publicity plan defines the way publicity will be done and sets the schedule.

Publicize supportive services. Supportive services, such as training and mentoring, are often optional. Publicity helps ensure that project managers, project teams, and other stakeholders make use of these services.

Publicize controlling services. Controlling services, such as reviews and audits, are usually required. Nonetheless, publicity is necessary to inform project managers and other stakeholders of what is required and to gain cooperation.

Directive services. When the PMO directly controls projects, and a project manager report directly to the PMO, the PMO can instruct project managers, project teams, and stakeholders to use the services.
